"If you have a good attitude you'll be fine"
We are at this resort for second time in two years. Most of the staff I remember, so the fact they are still here means that they have endured the boorish behaviour of many guests. And good for them. Some reviewers complain about the food. It's not like you are paying for a $100.00 meal folks! There is plenty of what you like to fill your plate once. And far be it for me to judge, but looking at some people, that's what they should do. In fact, maybe just a salad and your bodies will thank you. I think too many people are obsessed with free food and drinks and expect the best of both, when really they should be walking the amazing beach or using the great facilities like Hobie Cats, kayaks, pool, etc. and burning that fat. Hint: if you want to be treated well, treat others (staff) well. they are super friendly if you just say hello, smile, and leave tips. Not big tips- just something to let them know you appreciate their service for work they do for what I can only imagine to be meagre wages.
"Quiet, beautiful, the perfect getaway"
My parents have been coming to this place for 10 years and counting, this past November my girlfriend and I had a chance to join them for a week-long stay at Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach. The flight in was nice and short - from Ft. Lauderdale, it's only about a 30-35 minute flight. The airport is small and quaint, and taxis were waiting to take us on the short 15-minute drive to the resort. Even though we arrived after dark on the first day, we could feel the warm sea breeze and smell the water right away. After check-in we headed to our room (and were helped by a very nice staff member who carried our bags over), and from there we went down to sit on the beach and look up at the stars and enjoy the surroundings. After the sun goes down the beach is typically deserted as the people staying there gather for dinner, drinks, and dancing in the main bar and dining areas. The resort itself had everything we needed and nothing we didn't - a large pool, a huge hot tub (perfect for evening star gazing with a drink or a snack), a long beach with a beautiful ocean view (nothing in sight to the horizon) and plenty of sitting space in the sun and the shade, a beach-side shack with drinks and a small food selection for snacking all day, tons of activities (snorkels, scuba gear, small sail boats, kayaks, paddle boards, wind surfing boards, archery, trapeze, and much more, with lessons available for almost anything), buffets for breakfast lunch and dinner, a nice restaurant for special meals (but we loved the buffet), a nice gift shop, and the list goes on... We spent more of our days walking the beach, swimming in the ocean, borrowing snorkels, learning how to sail, soaking up the sun, eating good food, enjoying the amazing weather, and wishing we never had to leave. Snorkeling was amazing - inside the large roped-off swimming area in the ocean, on the left side, was a nice small coral reef under water, where you could snorkel and see all sorts of beautifully colored tropical fish. Some were very friendly and would swim right up to your mask and watch you watch them, and others were shy and you had to swim around to spot them from the perfect angle just inside a coral reef nook or cranny. Snorkeling was one of the best things we did that week. You can also rent a car for a very reasonable price and drive inland to see the rest of the island - caves, parks, other beaches, other dive locations, and the main town are all wonderful destinations for day trips. This place is no party-all-night, close-to-night-club spring break heaven for teenagers, which is why we LOVE it and we'll be returning every chance we get.
"One of the best vacation"
l almost cancelled our vacation because of the negative reviews,so before we went there l bought a loaf of bread, peanut butter, nutella, lot of chips, because they said the food was awful. Once we got there, the place was beautiful! and it was clean. The first night we ate at the Italian restaurant. The food was delicious. The second night we ate at the buffet The food was also very good with a lot of choices. l have two picky eaters in my family. They wear happy just eating pizza, fries & pasta. With this package, they served hamburgers, hotdogs and french fries right next to the beach. This food was also very good. My advice to people is not run away from an opportunity to experience a beautiful location like this just from the negative reviews. Further to come with the open mind and see the positive aspects of this place and what it has to offer. We had the best time and my teenagers had a blast!
"Great Value for your money. Excellent trip"
Okay so my family owns a timeshare through RCI and I traded it in for a week's stay here at the Viva Wyndham. I am 29 years old and took my two close friends. This resort is a good mix for both young adults and couples/families. The staff is incredible, KJ, Kaylah, Emah, Carlene, Valentina, Andreas, Markus, etc. They work 16 hour days to make sure your visit is the best it can be. The staff is constantly doing events to keep you busy, whether yoga, zumba, trapeze, beach volleyball, bingo, music and the shows. I would say this resort is geared more toward single/young couples. They promote drinking (why not it's all inclusive?). Music is blasting all day long. And after the 9pm daily show, the staff encourages everyone to drink and dance at the bar/disco until 2am. If you are a family who likes to be in bed by 10pm you may be annoyed with the late night music. I don't have any kids, but they do take care of kids. One staff member (Emah?) does arts and crafts and other activities to keep your kids busy during the day if you want. The resort is not old. We stayed at the RCI/Viva members building. Maybe that building was upgraded, I don't know, but the bathrooms were redone and very fancy. You have to remember this isn't a 5 star hotel, but for 3 stars you get incredible value. Late night pizza is amazing. Beach bar burgers are good too. The buffet food is average and almost the same daily. Breakfast is great, make sure you walk over there hungover and not miss it. Best meal of the day. There are two rotating restaurants on site you have to book a reservation for. I went to the Italian one. It was okay. Worth trying for a night or two. If you are a couple, it will feel like a date so probably worth it. The resort is steps from a private beach. No one else goes there but guests. There will be locals trying to sell you merchandise but they aren't allowed on the property they have to stay on the shoreline. They are nice people though, buy a konch shell or just ignore them. you can get your hair braided by them too. They don't bother you. Take a ride into Port Lucaya for $18 and see the shops and take some excursions. That will be worth it for a day trip. Wednesday night is "Fish Fry" at Smith Point. Get there early. Ask the staff and locals about it.
"Weekend Getaway"
When we first arrived here, there was not a lot of people and the resort seemed old and dark. We considered going to another resort but once we met the staff and saw the beach we realized we were very lucky. The staff was energetic and so much fun....the resort, although it is not shiny and new was so personable...thanks to KJ, Andreas, Laura, Charlene, Cathy and Allison. The beach is pristine. We walked for an hour without stepping on a rock or shell and actually didn't see many people either. Felt somewhat like we were on our own private island. Usually stay in at least 4 or 5 star but this felt really good, awesome time.,,thanks!! And....need some more healthy food down at the beach bar. Also, as two ladies travelling alone...the grounds need more lighting and a little manicuring would help "a lot"
""Back Again""
We are former residents of Freeport, residing there from 1975 until 1981. We have lived in California since 1981. We have returned to Freeport many times. The past 8 return trips we have stayed at Viva Fortuna. We have been there as a couple with our kids and grandkids and for the past two visits with a group of 8 adults. Each visit has been great. For the past two to three visits we were treated with utmost courtesy and cooperation from Mr. LaChapel and Kendall Burrows and th Fortuna staff. Our latest visit was in November and we were treated with utmost courtesy from Loyda Torres. We are looking forward to meeting the new General manager on our next visit and know we will receive the courtesy that is normal for Viva Fortuna guests. The staff at viva are awesome and always happy and helpful. The food is very good and improves each time we visit. To all the staff at Fortuna, thank you and see you soon.
"Third timer...."
Well we just booked our third trip in 3 years back to Viva Wyndham. We got a great deal through Orbitz this year had a $250 promo code that ended Dec 2. We live in Pittsburgh and love to need to get out of the winter weather for 5 days at least every February (our anniversary)just to get through the winter season. My husband is a mechanic and I am a nurse and we work hard for our money and have stressful jobs. We dont exchange any gifts throughout the yr for birthdays chrsitmas or anniversaries to save for this trip. We've been to alot of topical places over the last 18 years but Grand Bahama Island is by far one of the most welcoming and has the cleanest most beautiful beaches that I can remember. You can walk for miles on that beach, and the water is calm and shallow far out with a sandy bottom. We always have booked the of upgraded vista room and have never regretted it. The view is magnificent. The staff is friendly and very accomodating. Food and drink are plentiful and good. The only other expenses are the cab ride to and from the airport which is around $25 if I remember correctly, and perhaps a bottle of water here or there. The rooms are very clean and housekeeping staff is hardworking and trustworthy. The buffet and the Italian restaurant are very good. Beach bar is good with good aftenoon snacks such as burgers dogs wing fries and pizza. While not fancy by any means it is a very comfortable nonpretentious vacation. 66 days and counting...cant wait to get back to our little island in the sun. Where else can you get an affordable comfortable relaxing vacation in such a beautivul place? :)...66 days to paradise!!!
"Better in The Bahamas"
My husband and I have just returned from a one week stay at Viva Fortuna Beach and we loved it! A beautiful remote location, we enjoyed walking on the beach, the large clean pool and hot tub. The food was bland but lots of variety. The beach restaurant had tasty burgers, hot dogs and fries and there is a late night snack bar with very good pizza. Very good value for the money! Clean, great staff, loved The Bahamas!
"Friendly Staff, Great beach"
Booked a last minute 4 day vacation here through Westjet. For the price we received I couldn't be happier with the resort. Food was good, although the al la carte restaurant basically had the exact same food as the buffet, only difference is that it was served to you. (the "two" a la carte restaurants are actually just one restaurant, and they alternate between Italian and oriental every other day). Still very happy with the resort and the food (I'm not picky). Best part is the beach! The resort also offers free sailing and trapezing which I was impressed with - we did both and they were a ton of fun.
"Last minute bargain holiday!"
I honestly cannot believe some of the reviews on here, we booked our break last minute as a cheap family getaway. I was preparing myself for the worse so I wouldn't be disappointed if it was terrible. But I'm so pleased to say its a great hotel, the reception staff are not the pleasantest. But everybody else goes out there way to make your holiday enjoyable. The entertainment staff are constantly encouraging everyone to join in the activities. We are still currently here, and the only reason I'm writing this is because my little boys are asleep, and you have free wifi! The hotel is a three star hotel doing as it promises and more! The food is good for an all inclusive, the drinks are plentiful, the rooms are clean. I think we are lucky maybe that we came after the refurbishment as bathroom is great, although a bit small. Everything seems to have had a facelift! Really come on how can these people not be enjoying themselves? They need to look over the small things and relax and enjoy themselves! I could lay on your beach all day watching the beautiful ocean!
"Not as bad as everyone says really!"
Its not as bad as they say on here. Me and my boyfriend(gay couple) were there from novembre 11th to 15th (short stay - 5 days). It was awesome. The weather was good except for one day it was cloudy and windy but it was still a great time...walking by the beach and stuff. The room was clean and freshly renovated (ask for room with ocean view). The food was good and the drinks were okay like any other resorts. I liked the bar and snackspot on the beach...they make hamburgers and hotdogs/pizza on the beach there. The beach is great but theres a lot of rocks so u will want to walk to your left on the beach to get to this amazing point where u have water up to ur knees for a mile long...no rocks whatso ever. Its also the spot where they filmed Pirates of The Carribean. It was amazing (see pictures). The people working there are very welcoming but i couldnt understand what they were saying to me cuz first of all im french and also their accents are very strong(sounds jamaican). It was pretty calm when we went. Overall it was great value/quality resort with everything u need... I would go back anytime and i will recommend it to my friends and family.
"great deal for the price."
Right on the beach. Very relaxing. Kind of far from everything-- u need to rent a car or pay to go to town, but if you want peace and quiet to relax this is the place. I loved the buffet, my spouse was lukewarm about it. Lots of choices for each meal. The restaurants on site are not really worth it. Stick with the buffet. The late night pizza is awesome. Drinks were great. Late night bar events go pretty late. IF you want quiet ask for a room far from the action. Overall, we loved it.
"My 7 night all inclusive stay - the first week of May 2004"
I had a garden view room on the first floor. The food was good & there was plenty of it. The alcoholic drinks were strong. The beach was beautiful & only 4 feet deep in the afternoon when the tide had gone out. I snorkeled around a big piece of coral about 28 feet from shore where there were plenty of fish. I went on the glass bottom boat tour. I arrived late & they took me by speed boat to the ship. I looked down in the water way a huge sting ray was gliding along the bottom. I got to the boat & we went 1 &1/2 miles from shore. The tour guide threw a whole loaf of bread into the water & the fish came up by the hundred to eat it. I also had conch cerviche & deep fried conch. It was good. They don't recommend swimming at the beach after dusk because of sharks. They said that 2 people were eaten by sharks at Lucaya after dark. They feed the sharks at one of the restaurants that overlooks the waterway.
"LOVE!!!"
Ok, so I've read lots of bad reviews on this place, but i've been there twice and will continue to go back! If you are looking for a place to relax, this is the place!! My husband and i chose this place as an excursion on a cruise a few years ago and just LOVED it! So Beautiful and Relaxing!! We did the same cruise this May and took our daughter with us this time and she had a Blast! They have a Huge Swimming Pool (unsalted) LOL! My daughter didnt care for the beach as it was salt water so the pool was her BFF! :) Bar on the Beach that serves the BEST drinks! They also serve food. Anyway, if you are in Freeport for the day, on a cruise as we were maybe... take a chance on this place! We were not dissapointed! I'd actually consider going back to stay as the prices are very reasonable compared to other places in the area.
"Had a good time!"
My boyfriend (now fiance, we got engaged at the resort, so this vacation will be something to remember!!) and I spent August 11-August 15th, 2013 at Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff was very friendly and always willing to help, answer any questions that we may have and if we needed anything in our room, they brought it promptly. The food on the buffet was a little different than we are used to. There were a few times we had trouble finding something we liked. The fried conch that was provided on the Bahama food themed night was delicious-I recommend anyone who travels to the Bahamas to try it. The Italian Restaurant was delicious, and the pizza at the pizza place that opened at night was also delicious. The staff puts on a show every night and the shows were our favorite part of the resort. They were always great for a good laugh and we looked forward to seeing each of the shows. They always tried to provide something for everyone to do and enjoy. The staff seemed to really enjoy working their jobs-most of the ground staff are also ones who put on the shows at night and they really get in to entertaining and making people laugh and have a good time. We tried snorkeling, equipment was provided for free by the resort, and you could use it for an hour. There were also other activities which were provided for free, kayaking and the trapeze. Our room only had a shower-no tub. I was able to access Wi-Fi from our room also, which was a pleasant surprise, I wasn't expecting to be able to get online except in public areas of the resort. If you are expecting a fancy resort this isn't for you-but I think it is perfect for those looking for an affordable get away by the beach, or a family vacation. I recommend using Reef Tours if you plan on going on the glass bottom boat tour excursion. They were very informative and it was so interesting to see all of the fish and my favorite part-sharks! Also, we did a combination tour of the island and shopping also, where the driver showed us interesting part of the island and he made it a very enjoyable experience. My fiance went on a reef fishing trip, but found it to be a bit crowded, due to the Carnival cruise ship people also doing excursions that day, and the time was cut short because they had to board their ship again...it was supposed to be 3 hours, and ended up only being about 2 hours.
"Super fun."
I stayed there for 2 days and honestly I didn't want to leave! The staff was really nice. The beach was amazing! But the beach bar would have these awesome burgers! Honestly the best pizza was the one you get at 10pm.. But other than that it was great! I love how the employees did the night show! The next day I would walk around looking for the employees that were in the show the night before. The daily activities were fun! I loved how they had archery, kayacking, paddle boarding, paintball, Zumba! Basically a bit of everything!
